  • Elevate the head of your bed. Use extra pillows if need be.

You May Be Curious As To What The Cause Of Snoring Is

In general and not a rule, those who snore do it because they have extra nasal and throat tissue which tend to vibrate when in a relaxed state. Also, your tongue may be helping with your snoring issue as well. If your tongue is crowding the air passage it can result in snoring by disallowing effortless breathing. It is very important to note when and how you snore. This can determine whether your snoring is within your control or not.

Recruit your sleep partner in helping you discover your problem. I am sure he or she will be more than willing to help since it affects them too.

Your partner will need to note where the sound is coming from as well as what time after you have fallen asleep you started snoring. It is also important to note the position in which you are lying at the time of snoring.I would keep a journal for about a week to two weeks and then evaluate any patterns.

The reason you will want to learn all of the above is because snoring is caused by the narrowing or the restricting of your air passage which may be caused by unusual or access soft tissue in your throat, or simply bad sleep posture.

Snoring Causes That Are Out Of Our Control

  • Being a male – men are most likely to snore because they have narrower air passages then women do
  • Your age matters – if you are middle aged or older then it is common that your throat becomes narrower. Also, the muscle tone in your throat becomes weaker.
  • If you have allergies, a cold, sinus infection, and asthma – Again, narrow air ways makes it difficult to breathe. It results in forcing air in which leads to the sound of snoring.

Snoring Causes That Are In Our Control

  • Are you a smoker or live with anyone who is? – The inhalation of smoke or second hand smoke relaxes the muscles in your throat and may create nasal congestion.
  • The consumption of medications or alcohol – Again these lead to your throat muscles relaxing causing more sawing logs.
  • Do you have good sleep posture? – When you are sleeping while on your back, your throat becomes relaxed and gravity naturally pulls the flesh of your throat narrowing your air passage. It is best to sleep on your side to handle this problem.

What Are The Health Effects Snoring Has On Us?

One of the most common health effects from snoring are loss of sleep for both you and your sleeping partner. When you are sawing logs at night, you really aren’t getting a good nights rest. Not to mention any tossing and turning you are doing.

Being sleep deprived has a negative impact on your health. You will inevitably be suffering from chronic fatigue, lack of productivity, and irritability. Chronic snorers are more often than not men who are middle aged and overweight. If you fit into this category you really need to understand why you are snoring. It may be cause by a more severe underlying problem explained next.

Sleep Apnea May Be Causing You To Snore

In this report we have been talking mainly about the cause of snoring being the narrowing of your airways. However, a more serious reason you may suffer from snoring is because of sleep apnea. Sleep apnea is a breathing problem where your breathing pattern completely stops from various obstructions and requires you to wake up to begin breathing normally again.

Because you need to wake up to start breathing again it is natural, with this disease, to wake up many times throughout the night. The odd thing about sleep apnea is that you don’t even realize you are waking up several times. If you have sleep apnea, you belong to a different category of problems altogether. Snoring is just a symptom of it.

Please consult your physician for more information and testing.
